It’s funny that you posted about Hell House and Graham Masterton, because those were two topics I was planning to post about in the near future! (I’m brushing up on my Masterton now!) I agree about Hell House – it’s funny that the haunted house is a classic theme in horror, but really good classic haunted house stories seem to me hard to find. Matheson’s is one of the best, though.

Richard Kelly’s new movie Southland Tales opened last week.

Boo!

It’s not playing anywhere within 6 hours of me.

Granted, the film does seem to be a study in un-marketability. It is allegedly unintelligible if you don’t read the prequel graphic novels. (Sort of like Donny Darko didn’t make sense unless you dug through the website.) I bought the last two issues of the graphic novels a few months ago, but the first one had escalated in price to nearly $75. Fortunately all three volumes are now combined into one book, which I just got today as a belated birthday present. (Thanks, critter!)

I don’t mind a bit of deviation, but the synopsis sounded like it was deviating so much that it isn’t really related to the original story anymore. I guess you’d have to read it and see what you think…

Deviation is fine with me. I love the original story, but its almost a sketch. There’s lots of room for someone to extend the story without contradicting the material. I think that’s why I often prefer film adaptations of short stories over adaptations of novels.

I didn’t mention “Stir of Echoes” simply because I was getting tired of listing all the things that came from Matheson! (I could also have mentioned “The Legend of Hell House” and his screenplay for “Jaws III” that the studio butchered so badly that he took his name off.) In terms of things that people would be familiar with, I suspect many people haven’t seen “Stir”, though it is an excellent film and one of my favorite modern ghost stories.

I didn’t notice that Richard Kelly is directing “The Box”! That might make it interesting. I was a bit worried, reading the film synopsis, because it looks like the story will deviate significantly from the original source material. Time will tell…

Oh, and speaking of the new film adaptation of “The Box”… Aside from the fact that it’s directed and written by Richard “Donnie Darko” Kelly, which I’m sure you know, did you notice that James Marsden is currently listed in the cast. He is also one of the voice actors for Conan: Red Nails, which you posted about here.
