Although I think some of your criticisms are legitimate, you've used a poor passage translation from Deuteronomy. In the KJV, Deuteronomy 29:18 reads "18Lest there should be among you man, or woman, or family, or tribe, whose heart turneth away this day from the LORD our God, to go and serve the gods of these nations; lest there should be among you a root that beareth gall and wormwood"

This passage of the Bible is referring to those who turned away from God to worship man-made idols, not to those who simply do what their heart says is right.

It is immediately preceded by "17And ye have seen their abominations, and their idols, wood and stone, silver and gold, which were among them".

I think that this context is very important, especially since it is referring specifically to the golden calf idols which the Israelites made while Moses was leading them to the Promised Land. The passage, when properly interpreted (in my opinion), tells us that man should not worship man-made things, he should only worship things that come from God. I would also argue that the goodness in the heart of every person is God's greatest gift, and that to follow your heart is one of the best ways of being a Christian, regardless of your actual religious beliefs. I would consider a kind atheist to be a far better Christian than a cruel believer.

Cheers,

I have always been curious. Why logical, rational human beings can be so irrational with religion?

How can you be for "freedom" yet for slavery of the God complex?

This post is QUITE excellent. I really needed this to organize my argument. May I use this in my research thesis?

BTW, case and point: Judaism dominance in the Media, and other forms of a world wide religion that is 0.22% of the World's religion.

How can this one religion be considered the "true" word of God and be so defended and attacked at the same time?

I think it would be legitimate under "Fair Use" law to reproduce a panel or two out of the Peanuts strips you describe. Not that you have to, mind, since your descriptions are perfectly adequate and serviceable, but given that you'd be reproducing a small fraction of a large work for purposes of non-commercial, scholarly commentary, I think it'd be cricket.

Thanks for the pointer to the Schulz interview.
