For a country that can quite rightly be proud of its achievements in science, technology and engineering, it is shocking if such ignorance truly exists in the highest ranks of American leadership. For McCain to have made the error once might be forgiven as misunderstanding, or at least ignored as shameless political point scoring, but to have done so twice reveals a disturbing disregard for science and the benefits of a scientific education.

If McCain had been a little more inspired by the wonders of the universe when he was a young boy, perhaps after a visit to his local planetarium, we probably wouldn’t be having this conversation. Let’s hope the same source of inspiration isn’t denied to future generations of Americans.
