Vote for Laelaps!

It’s a little late in the process, but I just noticed today that Brian Switek, who writes Laelaps, has fallen behind in votes for the 2008 Blogging Scholarship.  The deadline for votes is tomorrow, but if you have a chance, follow this link and give Brian a vote!

If you don’t read Laelaps, you should really give it a look: Brian writes about paleontology, evolution and the history of science, among other things, and posts beautiful animal photos.

Thanks for the link! The contest is actually open until the 20th, but I am certainly grateful for all the votes made this weekend.

  2. Laelaps: Glad to help! I was a little surprised that the scholarship pits bloggers of all types against one another in what seems to be a simple popularity contest. Science bloggers would always seem to be at a disadvantage against political or sports bloggers.

Now that you mention it, this does sound like an awfully silly way to handle a decision involving an actual distribution of money. Wouldn’t it be better to have, say, four $2,500 prizes, each covering a genre (politics, science and technology, …)? Each winner would get less money than the single winner did before, but the funds given out would be distributed more fairly.

  4. Blake: I would tend to agree with you, though ideally I’d love to see $10k for each genre, rather than splitting it! Considering how much effort goes into running a successful blog, the writers have certainly earned at least that much. Splitting the prize seems like the easiest way to make certain that the prize isn’t just about number of readers, though.
