A few weeks ago I stumbled across this fascinating quiz on GoToQuiz. Many of the quizzes one takes online are just silly, content-free distractions (with the exception of the Dungeons & Dragons character quiz I’ve talked about earlier), but this one really seems to work: “What American accent do you have?” My results are below:

I have to say, they’ve nailed it. I’m originally from the Chicago area. The quiz also tagged the fiancée as being from Ohio (the ‘midlands’, I think they called it). Does it correctly determine your accent? Give it a try!

Your fiancé and I have the same non-accent. “The Midland” rules! We “have a good voice for TV and radio.”
(I actually used to have an “Inland North” accent, but I spent three formative high school years in Missour-ah, and apparently that averaged me out.)
PD – I didn’t think I had an accent until I went to a college roommate’s house for the weekend. Her family lived outside of Dayton. I was telling a story at the dinner table when her father called me out for having a northeastern accent based on my “nasal A” pronunciation when I said “jacket”. I was mortified.
Down here in the South, I have been identified as a Clevelander based on my “accent” as well. I guess some people are more sensitive than others.
